How To Print On Canvas

Progress in printer and ink technology of recent years has allowed printing on various substrates including real canvas. These are not papers but rather 100% cotton real artist’s canvas with a high-resolution Inkjet coating that will handle high definition photography with ease. The printed canvas can be framed for desk or wall mounting. Here are out tips for printing on canvas.

What Is Canvas Sheets

It is important to distinguish between two ‘variations’ of printable canvas. One variation is a normal photo paper with a canvas like texture often referred to as ‘canvas paper’. Prior to printing it may look like real canvas, but it isn’t as you are unable to stretch the media to benefit from the abilities of real canvas. The second and the topic of this guide is the true 100% cotton artist’s canvas, which isn’t a paper, but rather a cotton media that was coated with a high-res Inkjet coating to accommodate the print on the cotton. The coating ensures that the image displays the full spectrum of colours and sub-tones without bleeding or smearing.  As these are often used for artistic purposes, the finish is traditionally matte finish and weight will revolve around the 350gsm mark.

Conduct A Simple Printer Pre-Check

Prior to sourcing the canvas, you need to check that your printer is of the Inkjet type. Canvas sheets are commonly made for Inkjet printers because unlike laser, the print quality of images and attention to details of image definition is better.

The weight of the sheets will exceed 300gsm (gsm = a measurement of paper density) so you will be required to check that your printer can handle this weight without jamming. In fact, you should quickly read our top 10 paper printing mistakes to ensure other common mistakes have been addressed.

Adjust Your Printer

If you attempt to simply feed the cotton canvas and print using normal settings you will likely get mediocre results at best. It is essential to adjust the printer to get the best from the canvas.  The package will arrive with comprehensive printer set up instructions but in general terms, canvas is printed using High Resolution, Photo Quality or Premium Matt Paper settings, depending on the printer you use.

Printing on canvas is truly special!

    Hi Joseph,

I use photoshop CS5 to print on my Epson stylus pro 9800. I am struggling to choose the right colour and media settings (including printer profile) to get the right colour.
I mainly print on Poly Canvas. Your response will be highly appreciated.

    Kind regards,
